The major purpose of the current study is to provide suggestions regarding parents¡¯ roles in the interpersonal relationship development of a sample of middle school students, more specifically in terms of the utilization of a student¡¯s individuality and relatedness. To do so, 611 middle school students were recruited in the Gyeonggi area, the most populous province in South Korea, and two mediating effects were tested: 1) the mediating effect of the individuality and relatedness on the relationship between parent-adolescent communication style and interpersonal relationship; and 2) the mediating effect on the relationship between parent-adolescent communication style and loneliness. The results indicate that individuality-relatedness has a mediating effect on the relationship between the parental open communication style and interpersonal relationship, and the same effect was also identified on the relationship between loneliness and maternal open communication style, as well as relatedness between loneliness and father¡¯s problem oriented communication style. Individualization is one of the major cultural changes in Korean society and the result provides important understanding to better guide both parents and students in terms of adolescents¡¯ interpersonal relationship development.
